South Africa December 15-29, 2005
We had a lovely vacation in South Africa over the 2005 Christmas holiday, especially as Jim and Liz Wood were able to join us. Dick and Susan had a day in Johannesberg to rest up from the long flight, before Jim and Liz arrived and we left for three days of game viewing at Honeyguide Lodge on the edge of Kruger National Park. From there, we flew to Rocktail Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, near the border with Mozambique, to spend three days on the Indian Ocean beach. We ended with five days in Capetown for a truly memorable trip.

Rocktail Bay is a nesting area for leatherback and loggerhead turtles. We took a nighttime turtle drive after we arrived, and came across this leatherback turtle just as she finished laying her eggs. You can tell her size by looking at the legs of the people in the background. At 6 feet long, she was considered fairly small.
